As a teacher, I supplement my lessons with appropriate worksheets. I can then check a student has progress. I can also monitor how much work they actually are doing. For parents, printable math worksheets are a great tool for drilling their own kids in those same skills. Make no mistake, printable math worksheets are not a relic from the past that needs to stay buried. They are useful, focused tools for the classroom or at home. You can find resources all over the web for worksheets. Finding answers for worksheets, however, is not that easy. For that you often have to use paid subscription services.
Cloze worksheets are also known as "Fill in the Blank" worksheets. Words are deleted from a prose sentence or passage and the reader is required to fill in the blanks. Cloze tests or exercises require the ability to understand context and vocabulary in order to select correct words for completion. Given the right design, these worksheets can be used at all levels of literacy. A search on the term "cloze generator" will find software programs which create cloze worksheets by randomly deleting words from a passage you enter. If, on the other hand, you would like to design the worksheet yourself, here are some tips for doing so.
The heading of the worksheet is very important. You need to check if the heading summarizes the worksheet? It ideally should summarize what the worksheet is all about. Check the basic layout of the worksheet before buying it. Is the layout cramped or well spaced? How good are the visuals on the page? Can they keep the attention of little children? What is the quality of the content on the worksheets? The text for example, should not contain long sentences. This can make it difficult for the child to read. The language should also be simple so that children can understand what is written. Other things to look for are the quality of paper used and the packaging of the worksheets.
There are some new materials being developed now based on what we are learning about how the brain learns. These brain-friendly materials should be an improvement over what has existed. I recently bought a book by Marcia L. Tate titled "Mathematics Worksheets Do not Grow Dendrites." I highly recommend her book. She gives a great deal of information on alternative activities that are better for your child has brain development and for learning. No matter what materials you choose, it is most important that you supervise your child constantly so that mistakes get caught rather than practiced. I learned this particular lesson the hard way. When my daughter was young, she did something that needed "attention." I no longer remember what it was that she did, but I told her to write the sentence "I will not disobey my parents again" 50 times.
If a student is doing a worksheet of 40 problems all about the order of operations, and the student has a rule confused, then every problem will be missed. But the bigger concern is that the mistake just got practiced 40 times. It just became ingrained in that student has mind to forever cause trouble unless it can be corrected. I have had many high school Algebra students enter class thinking they know the correct order of operations, but we quickly learn that something is wrong. Digging a little deeper, we discover that they learned the order of operations incorrectly, although they will swear they are doing what they were taught. In reality, they have spent the previous couple of years practicing incorrectly. Their answers got marked wrong but no one took the time to find out why. And the damaged was never repaired.
Microsoft Excel Worksheets have built-in events that can run visual basic code based on certain action taken by the user within that specific worksheet. These worksheet events allow the users of Microsoft Excel to run code after activating a worksheet or before deactivating a worksheet. These events also allow users the ability to run a code every time a user changes data within a cell or selects a new range of cells. Newer versions of Excel have even created events that allow code to be run when tables and pivot tables are updated or refreshed.
