Now the best part of the goal setting worksheet is to list all the joy in accomplishing your goal or goals. How will your life be better from accomplishing your goal? If your goal is weight loss, how will a lower weight improve your life? If you goal is to earn more money, how will the money improve your life? The list of joys will help you fight through the obstacles when they occur. Remember the road trip to Orlando, Florida. We focus on the fun and joy you will have once you reach Orlando. We look forward to the sun, pools and rides in Orlando this keeps you going when you hit a roadblock. The list of joys in your goal setting worksheet will do the same. Think of how great your life will be once you accomplish your goal. In life we should not have one goal setting worksheet. We need to have multiple goal setting worksheets because in life we want to accomplish many goals, not just one big goal. Life is a series of goals.Dream big and continuously.
Another problem with almost all worksheets is that they do not prevent incorrect answers. Self-checking worksheets just let the student know they did something wrong--after the fact. I am a firm believer in the concept that, if at all possible, learning should be structured in small chunks in such a way that there is very little possibility for error. Worksheets often allow for mistakes to be made and then to be repeated many times. A mistake that gets practiced is extremely difficult to correct. This especially happens when worksheets are used as time fillers or baby sitters and the work is not really being supervised.
If you have read my article "Helping Your Child With Basic Arithmetic? Stay Away From Worksheets" then you know that I am not a fan of traditional worksheets. After writing that article, I found another credible teacher who has written many articles expounding on the benefits of worksheets. I decided some clarification of position is in order. The primary problem with most math worksheets is that the problems are already written out and the child need only write the answers. For learning and practicing the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, it is much more beneficial for the child to write out the entire fact and say the entire fact out loud. A child will learn a multiplication fact much faster if they are writing out 6 x 8 = 48 at the same time they are saying "six times eight is forty-eight" than if they just see 6 x 8 = ___ and only have to supply the 48.
Printable math worksheets can be used by both parents and teachers to help kids overcome some of their most common problems in leaning math. You see, I am a professional educator. I teach high school. I am also a parent. I wear both hats! Year after year, I see kids come into my classes completely unprepared to learn math. When I diagnose what the problem is, it is virtually always either they do not know their multiplication tables or, more often, they do not know how to work with fractions. I teach the upper grades in my school, yet I continue to see kids who do not even have basic algebra skills in place.
As a teacher, I supplement my lessons with appropriate worksheets. I can then check a student has progress. I can also monitor how much work they actually are doing. For parents, printable math worksheets are a great tool for drilling their own kids in those same skills. Make no mistake, printable math worksheets are not a relic from the past that needs to stay buried. They are useful, focused tools for the classroom or at home. You can find resources all over the web for worksheets. Finding answers for worksheets, however, is not that easy. For that you often have to use paid subscription services.
Most of even beginning algebra depends on being able to do two things--one, doing multiplication quickly and accurately in your head, two, knowing how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. You might remember a concept in algebra called factoring. Factoring means breaking up into parts that are multiplied together to give you the whole. You can factor numbers. For instance, 6 factors into 2 and 3--2x3 =6. In elementary algebra we learn to factor expressions such as x^2+4x+4. This particular expression is easily factor-able into (x+2)^2. If this does not make any sense to you, do not worry about it. Just trust me, if you do not know your multiplication tables, you can not factor. If you can not factor, you will not do well at all in algebra, geometry, or trigonometry.
