Multiplication tables are a great way to break into teaching multiplication. The five times tables and other small numbers prove easier to teach most elementary school students. Students will find it easy to just keep adding another digit to their last result to find the next number in the time tables. By teaching this first, you can get the students in the mood and comfortable with multiplying. The problems may occur, however, once you have reached a higher times tables than five. The trick of simply adding another digit to the last result, to find the next number in the table becomes much more difficult.
I am not naive. I know that making mistakes is a normal part of learning, and I know that sometimes there is benefit in teaching from mistakes. But a mistake made once is not the issue here. Skill and drill worksheets provide the unpleasant opportunity for repetition of a mistake. In a classroom setting, a student may have the sheet "completed" before the teacher can make it back around the room. The mistake gets practiced several times and probably will not be identified until the next day. Doing a worksheet at home may or may not be successful. The parent must supervise every moment the child is working on the worksheet if mistakes are to get caught before practiced. No looking at the TV, no stepping into the kitchen to stir the soup, nothing! We have all heard the saying "Practice makes perfect." Unfortunately, it is not true. Practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect. We do not want permanent mistakes! And as I have said before, there are many interesting, even exciting ways to teach and learn. Why use skill and drill worksheets when it is known how harmful they can be?
A goal setting worksheet is like the road map. The map gives you an overview of the route to take, but it does not show all the obstacles such as traffic accidents and road repair on your journey. Your goal setting worksheet works the same way. We never know exactly how we will arrive at the goal. We will have obstacles and unexpected events we cannot anticipate on our journey. Accomplishing your goal is not any different from a road trip to Orlando, Florida. You know you will arrive, but you do not the exact time or route.
The same is true for mastery of working with fractions. So, in general, kids who do not learn their multiplication tables and arithmetic with fractions usually do not do well in math. It is been proven that success in science depends to a great extent on success in math. So, these same kids usually do not do well with science, either. In other words, they are locked out of most of the growth that our economy is going to experience in the future. According to the federal government, eight out of ten jobs in the next twenty years are going to be computer related. If you want your child to have access to the major portion of jobs in the future, your child must master math. It is that simple.
Printable math worksheets can be used by both parents and teachers to help kids overcome some of their most common problems in leaning math. You see, I am a professional educator. I teach high school. I am also a parent. I wear both hats! Year after year, I see kids come into my classes completely unprepared to learn math. When I diagnose what the problem is, it is virtually always either they do not know their multiplication tables or, more often, they do not know how to work with fractions. I teach the upper grades in my school, yet I continue to see kids who do not even have basic algebra skills in place.
If you think your child will benefit, there are things you can buy to enhance their studies. You can obviously buy books to help them, but many children see reading as a chore these days. You can choose from a number of computer software CDs and math web sites that make multiplication fun. These math games allow your child to have fun playing games while getting to know multiplication tables at the same time. Teachers must obviously set appropriate homework, and make sure that it is not too much. Homework is an important part of a student has studies, but setting too much can lower morale and make a child feel overwhelmed. Setting fun and sensible amounts of homework can seriously help a child on their way to memorizing and understanding the multiplication tables.he most important thing to remember when trying to help your child is to try to keep it fun. Math should always be presented to children in a fun way. They should not even realize they are learning.
