I have said Do Not Use Worksheets about every way there is to say it, and each time I have included solid brain-based, researched reasons for this statement; and yet, I know that many people will ignore the science in favor of the convenience. It is very difficult to fight the tide when there are so many internet sites pushing worksheets at parents, and so many reputable textbook companies doing likewise. It is difficult to remember the reasons to avoid them when one has very little time to devote to working with math. Worksheets just seem so much easier than doing things any other way. Can they really cause harm?
Cloze worksheets are also known as "Fill in the Blank" worksheets. Words are deleted from a prose sentence or passage and the reader is required to fill in the blanks. Cloze tests or exercises require the ability to understand context and vocabulary in order to select correct words for completion. Given the right design, these worksheets can be used at all levels of literacy. A search on the term "cloze generator" will find software programs which create cloze worksheets by randomly deleting words from a passage you enter. If, on the other hand, you would like to design the worksheet yourself, here are some tips for doing so.
Parents can look for fun math games or even worksheets that are designed to challenge and teach the student without intimidating them. Sometimes youngsters enjoy challenging friends or siblings close to their own age to competitive games if they feel that they can show off something new that they have learned. Children are naturally inquisitive and many are blessed with the ability to learn very quickly. Look for ways to take advantage of their natural curiosity and love of games and you might find that the process of learning and practicing multiplication facts does not have to be a painful one.
Microsoft Excel Worksheets have built-in events that can run visual basic code based on certain action taken by the user within that specific worksheet. These worksheet events allow the users of Microsoft Excel to run code after activating a worksheet or before deactivating a worksheet. These events also allow users the ability to run a code every time a user changes data within a cell or selects a new range of cells. Newer versions of Excel have even created events that allow code to be run when tables and pivot tables are updated or refreshed.
The Worksheet Activate event is a Microsoft Excel event that works on many different versions of Excel. It designed to run a script of code every time the specific worksheet is activated. This event has no required or optional parameters. This event can be used to show a hidden a worksheet upon its activation or it can pop up a login or data form. The Worksheet Deactivate event is similar to the Worksheet Deactivate event; it also works on many different versions of Excel. This event is designed to run a script of code when a user selects any other worksheet. This event has no required or optional parameters. If the first worksheet is selected and someone selects another worksheet, than the first worksheet will run its Deactivate event. This can be used to hide unused worksheets after they are done be used.
NEVER use "skill and drill" worksheets. These are the worksheets just made up of columns of problems. There are better materials out there, so do not resort to skill and drill. The very worst problem of skill and drill worksheets is the greatly increased chance of a practiced mistake. The same problem will likely appear several times on the same sheet. A wrong answer once means a wrong answer several times; and a practiced mistake takes hundreds of correct repetitions to fix. This danger alone is important enough to never use any worksheet. I am quite serious about how difficult it is to repair a practiced mistake. Learning is hard enough. Re-learning is much more difficult.
