Never allow boredom to set in. We know now that when learning is fun and exciting, the brain is actually growing many new dendrites that make connections with many other dendrites. The more connections the better. We also know now that boredom destroys dendrites. Small children quickly become bored with worksheets, especially skill and drill worksheets. Yet another reason to avoid skill and drill worksheets like the plague. Never allow your child to use a worksheet unsupervised. Some parents use worksheets to provide time to fix supper or add another load of laundry. Unfortunately, while you are not looking, your child just might have practiced a mistake several times. The time you thought you saved is not nearly as much time as it will take to fix that mistake.
NEVER use "skill and drill" worksheets. These are the worksheets just made up of columns of problems. There are better materials out there, so do not resort to skill and drill. The very worst problem of skill and drill worksheets is the greatly increased chance of a practiced mistake. The same problem will likely appear several times on the same sheet. A wrong answer once means a wrong answer several times; and a practiced mistake takes hundreds of correct repetitions to fix. This danger alone is important enough to never use any worksheet. I am quite serious about how difficult it is to repair a practiced mistake. Learning is hard enough. Re-learning is much more difficult.
Once downloaded, you can customize the math worksheet to suit your kid. The level of the child in school will determine the look and content of the worksheet. Use the school textbook that your child uses at school as a reference guide to help you in the creation of the math worksheet. This will ensure that the worksheet is totally relevant to the kid and will help the child improve his or her grades in school. The math worksheet is not only for the young children in kindergarten and early primary school; they are also used for tutoring high school and university students to keep the student has math skills sharp. The sites that offer these worksheets have helped a lot and this resource is now a common thing to use for all kinds and levels of educators. The formats for the worksheets differ according to the level and content of the worksheets. For the young kids it is preferable to have the worksheet in large print, while the older students commonly use the small print ones that are simple and uncluttered.
One web site reviewed by this author boasted of having over 11,000 worksheets! These teaching aids were not just for math - they covered a variety of courses. And most importantly, they are all available to parents at no charge! Another website stated that it had thousands of e-worksheets available for the use of parents. Again, these learning aids ran the gamut of courses. There are worksheets for spelling, English, history, writing, music, and a variety of other courses, including geography. Some are available in hard copy and there are also many available over the Internet and as part of software. Surprisingly, many schools provide free worksheets to parents who purchase textbooks from the school.
Printable math worksheets can be used by both parents and teachers to help kids overcome some of their most common problems in leaning math. You see, I am a professional educator. I teach high school. I am also a parent. I wear both hats! Year after year, I see kids come into my classes completely unprepared to learn math. When I diagnose what the problem is, it is virtually always either they do not know their multiplication tables or, more often, they do not know how to work with fractions. I teach the upper grades in my school, yet I continue to see kids who do not even have basic algebra skills in place.
Use this book as a guide as to which multiplication worksheets you should print off. If your child is just beginning to multiply multi-digit problems without carrying, do not make the mistake of giving her worksheets that have carrying. It will most likely throw your child for a loop and she will become upset. Because there are so many sources of worksheets on the internet, you are never sure what you are going to find at a particular site. Choose worksheets that are neat and organized without too many problems jumbled on to each page. The concept of neatness needs to be taught to your child as they do math. If your child does not learn this, be prepared for many careless mistakes later on in his math work. Boys in particular do not take the time to be neat and careful. If you give him multiplication worksheets that are crowded on to each page without room to write the answers, this in encouraging messiness.
