So why would not I consider a skill and drill worksheet as an appropriate tool for accomplishing those repetitions? My reason for being opposed to skill and drill worksheets for any learning is based on another important statistic. Regardless of how many repetitions it takes to learn something the first time, if a fact, a technique, a definition, etc. is learned incorrectly, it will take many hundreds-yes hundreds-of repetitions to correct the mistake. Correcting a mistake involves unlearning that which has already been "learned" and then replacing it with the correct information.
A common problem for parents is having to do battle with their children when it comes time to practice learning their times tables. Many things have changed in education over the years, but the elementary math facts used in every level of education have remained the same. Many parents throw up their hands in frustration and give up after several failed attempts to force their child into hours of rote memorization. Many parents today learned their multiplication facts through threats and intimidation. Although forcing a child to sit and flip through flashcards for hours on end might achieve the desired end result of memorizing the facts, it can be quite an unpleasant experience for both the parent and the child. A much more productive method of teaching a child is to introduce some type of fun to the scenario. Certainly the child will have to memorize his or her facts, but it does not have to be an uncomfortable learning experience.
