During my teaching career, an often stated statistic was that for information to be considered learned it would need to be repeated or practiced 4 to 10 times. More recently, that number of needed repetitions has increased to anywhere from 20 to 50 times. Currently, the word repetition is being used in a guarded fashion. But the main point is that it does take many repetitions for information to be transferred into long-term memory and to be considered learned. If a student is doing a worksheet of 40 problems all about the order of operations, and the student has a rule confused, then every problem will be missed. But the bigger concern is that the mistake just got practiced 40 times. It just became ingrained in that student has mind to forever cause trouble unless it can be corrected. I have had many high school Algebra students enter class thinking they know the correct order of operations, but we quickly learn that something is wrong. Digging a little deeper, we discover that they learned the order of operations incorrectly, although they will swear they are doing what they were taught. In reality, they have spent the previous couple of years practicing incorrectly. Their answers got marked wrong but no one took the time to find out why. And the damaged was never repaired.
Crowded problems also confuse kids. When a child is first learning a new concept in math and they lack confidence, being faced with an overcrowded worksheet can cause instant panic. Avoid this with neat and professional worksheets. Since free multiplication worksheets are so easy to find, it is tempting to give your child too many. You mean well, but it just seems like a good idea to have them do several at a time. Little brains can only take so much. Keep learning fun by sprinkling worksheets into their curriculum as a fun break from their usual textbook. If you happen to have a competitive child, chances are he will love worksheets always trying to beat his last time. This is great and if this is the case, let him work all of the worksheets he wants. Just be sure that it is "child-driven" not "parent-driven" meaning - let it be his idea.
The Worksheet Activate event is a Microsoft Excel event that works on many different versions of Excel. It designed to run a script of code every time the specific worksheet is activated. This event has no required or optional parameters. This event can be used to show a hidden a worksheet upon its activation or it can pop up a login or data form. The Worksheet Deactivate event is similar to the Worksheet Deactivate event; it also works on many different versions of Excel. This event is designed to run a script of code when a user selects any other worksheet. This event has no required or optional parameters. If the first worksheet is selected and someone selects another worksheet, than the first worksheet will run its Deactivate event. If you have read my article "Helping Your Child With Basic Arithmetic? Stay Away From Worksheets" then you know that I am not a fan of traditional worksheets. After writing that article, I found another credible teacher who has written many articles expounding on the benefits of worksheets. I decided some clarification of position is in order. The primary problem with most math worksheets is that the problems are already written out and the child need only write the answers. For learning and practicing the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, it is much more beneficial for the child to write out the entire fact and say the entire fact out loud. A child will learn a multiplication fact much faster if they are writing out 6 x 8 = 48 at the same time they are saying "six times eight is forty-eight" than if they just see 6 x 8 = ___ and only have to supply the 48.
Worksheets are slowly becoming an important tool of learning for little children. Nowadays, worksheets are planned and created by many companies, publishers and schools. Some sell these worksheets both online and off-line and others let people download them from the internet. Since there are so many worksheets available in the market, it may be difficult for parents to know which the appropriate and right worksheet is for their child. This article will take you through the basic elements of a good worksheet for children. Creating a worksheet requires a lot of planning and research. Things like the purpose of the worksheet, the age group for which it is being created and the resources available to solve the worksheets should be considered.
